How do I know that we are recovering full costs?
Asta Petkeviciute, Chief Financial Steward, Social Impact CommonsIt’s been a long struggle to establish wider acceptance and understanding of the full costs of operating a nonprofit – that “overhead” is essential to the performance of the mission. If it is sufficiently covered, then mission, outcomes, and staff flourish. For fiscal sponsorship relationships, this may mean the sponsor’s and the project’s full costs of carrying out their work must be fully covered to flourish. During this hands-on session, we will test out a few different tools that could help you define the full costs of fiscal sponsorship services as well as assess how do those compare against the fiscal sponsorship revenues that are collected during the same time.

Charitable Fundraising Compliance for Fiscal Sponsors
Tracy Boak, Partner, Perlman & Perlman, LLPSponsors acting as the fiscal and legal host of charitable projects may not realize that their role includes taking on all the fundraising compliance obligations applicable to each of the projects it administers. Commonly overlooked requirements include the undertaking of state charitable registrations in all of the states where the project is actively fundraising; evaluation of the project’s fundraising contracts; proper assessment of fundraising compliance obligations for online solicitation; ensuring that each project is providing the required solicitation disclosures to potential donors in its fundraising materials. During this session, attorney Tracy Boak will review the state charitable solicitation obligations triggered by sponsored projects’ fundraising activities, and key fundraising issues scrutinized by regulators.

Lisa R Jackson, Executive Director, Tides Center
Suneela Jain, Chief Legal Counsel, Tides
Alicia Lara, President and CEO, Community PartnersThe social sector is fast coming to terms with the Supreme Court decision earlier this year to end Affirmative Action in Higher Education. As lawsuits begin, questions are everywhere about the implications of this decision for entities whose missions and work are intentionally focused on supporting BIPOC leaders and communities. What does all of this mean for fiscally sponsored projects in particular? What can fiscal sponsors do in this moment to support projects with missions and work that make them a target for interrogations and lawsuits? Our plenary panel will discuss these questions and provide their perspectives on how fiscal sponsorship as a field should respond in this moment.
